Menu Folders, Table Talkers and Bill Holders: The Branded Table

Pass The Sheet Around

A guest holds three things at your table: the menu, the table talker and the bill. What each one is for, and how to brand them so they last.

A guest sits down, picks up the menu, glances at the small stand on the table and, an hour later, receives the bill. Those three objects are the parts of your restaurant they actually hold. Most places put the care into the food and the room and let these three look like an afterthought.

The menu folder: the first thing guests hold

A laminated sheet tells guests the menu was printed in a hurry. A menu folder that is solid and comfortable in the hand sets a different tone before anyone has ordered. Menu folders are KSh 1,800 each and are made in our workshop, where the same finishing bench that does our embossing and foiling can add a debossed logo or a metallic accent to the cover.

Two things decide whether a folder survives a busy service. The cover has to wipe clean, because it will meet sauce and wet glasses. And the inside pages should be easy to swap, because prices and dishes change more often than you think. Ask how the pages are held before you choose a format.

The table talker: your quiet salesperson

There is a moment when every guest sits down and looks at the table, waiting. A table talker uses that moment. At KSh 2,500 each, with no minimum, it can carry:

  • Your paybill or till number, so guests pay without asking a waiter for it.
  • The WiFi password beside your logo, which saves staff answering the same question all day.
  • Today's special or a promotion you want noticed without a word from staff.

Paybill talkers work just as well on a reception desk, a salon counter or a shop till, anywhere customers pay. A talker has two jobs: stand steady and stay readable from a seated position. Ours are made to do both.

The bill holder: the last impression

Sliding the bill across on a saucer undoes an evening of good service. A branded bill holder at KSh 1,000 closes the meal the way the menu opened it. It also keeps the bill and any cash together and private.

What goes inside the holder has changed too. KRA requires all persons engaged in business to issue electronic tax invoices through eTIMS, and a guest can check an invoice by scanning the QR code printed on it. Choose a holder that takes the till receipt flat, so the code is not folded over.

Bill holders are handled many times a night, so choose a finish that wipes clean and a closure that does not wear out.

Choosing finishes that survive service

Restaurant items fail in predictable places. Covers get wiped with damp cloths dozens of times a day, corners get knocked against table edges, and anything printed on a soft surface scuffs where hands hold it. When you choose a finish, ask where the hands go and what the cleaning cloth will do to it. A deep debossed logo usually wears better than a printed one on a cover that is handled all night, and a darker cover hides wear longer than a pale one.

Make the set match

Ordered separately from three suppliers, these three items rarely match: the logo is a slightly different size, the colour drifts, the finishes clash. Ordered together, they read as one considered brand. Produced in-house on Kirinyaga Road, a matching set also makes top-ups easy when you add tables.

A useful order of work is to start small, ask about a sample of each, try them through a weekend service, then order the full set. Small changes made after a trial, such as a larger font for prices or a different talker message, cost little at that stage.

Restaurants and hotels protecting their cutlery and crockery from walking out the door should also read why hotel cutlery disappears and what stops it.

Common questions

How much do restaurant menu folders cost?

Menu folders are KSh 1,800 each, made in our Nairobi workshop. A debossed logo or a metallic accent on the cover can be added on our finishing bench; ask for the price of the finish you want.

What should a table talker say?

The things guests otherwise ask staff for: your paybill or till number, the WiFi password and today's offer. Keep it short enough to read from a chair, with the most important item largest.

Can I order just one sample first?

Table talkers have no minimum, so a single sample is fine. Ask about samples for menu folders and bill holders when you order; trying one of each through a busy service before ordering the full set is a sensible way to work.

How do I keep menus up to date when prices change?

Keep prices on replaceable inner pages and the branding on the folder cover. When prices change you reprint the inner sheets and keep the folders.
