Corporate Gifts in Kenya That Still Get Used in March

Pass The Sheet Around

A gift is judged in March, not in December. How to choose one that is still in use, and how to split a budget across clients and staff.

Someone in the office has been handed the year-end gift budget and a list of names. The easy move is to order one thing for everybody and be done with it. The test comes later. Walk past the same desks in March and count how many of the gifts are still in use.

That is the only measure worth applying, and it changes what you buy.

Daily use beats first impressions

A gift earns its cost every time it is picked up. A flask that goes to work every morning is seen by its owner, by the people at the next desk and by whoever shares the matatu. A crystal paperweight is admired once and then lives on a shelf.

So the useful question is not "what looks generous?" but "what will this person reach for on an ordinary Tuesday?" For most office workers in Kenya the answers are short: something to carry tea in, something to write in, something to drink from at the desk.

Insulated flasks sit at the top of that list. A branded Novac flask is KSh 1,100 and a Skinfeel 500ml flask with a soft-touch finish is KSh 1,000, and both are available as single pieces, which means you can order exactly the number of names on your list. Tea goes to meetings, field visits and long drives, and the flask goes with it.

Split the budget by who is receiving it

Most companies gift three groups at once, and they want different things.

Top clients and directors. This is where a heavier piece belongs: a flask, a premium mug, or a buckle notebook. A genuine Starbucks-made mug branded with a name is KSh 1,100 and a Stanley mug is KSh 1,700. The value is that it is recognised and personal at the same time.

The wider client list. Here a branded gift notebook does the job well. The range runs from KSh 550 to KSh 900 across fourteen cover styles, with a minimum of 12, so the executive buckle can go to senior contacts and a hardcover or bamboo cover to everyone else, all carrying the same logo.

Your own staff. A printed mug with each person's name is hard to beat for the money: white mugs are KSh 250, two-tone KSh 300 and magic mugs, where the design appears as hot water goes in, KSh 350, all with a minimum of 12. Every mug in the order can carry a different name, and a mug with your own name on it does not get borrowed.

One group needs a rule of its own. If some of your clients work in government, the Leadership and Integrity Regulations, 2015 allow a public officer to accept a non-monetary gift worth up to KSh 20,000 in an official capacity, and require anything worth more to be surrendered to their employer within 48 hours (regulation 5(2)). A named flask or notebook sits well inside that limit. A hamper of electronics may not.

Personalise the piece, not the card

A logo says who gave the gift. A name says who it is for, and that is the part people remember. Mugs, flasks, notebooks and keyholders can all carry a name as well as the logo, so a list of forty names is still one order.

Two practical points make this work. First, send the names as a typed list rather than a photo of a handwritten page, because spelling errors on a gift are worse than no name at all. Second, ask to see a preview of each piece before printing. On our mug orders a preview of every mug is sent for approval, and that is the moment to catch "Wanjiku" spelt three different ways.

What to skip

  • Items with no daily use. Ornaments, desk sculptures and anything that needs a shelf.
  • Clothing in guessed sizes. A shirt that does not fit is a shirt that is not worn. Save garments for staff, where you can collect sizes first.
  • A logo so large it embarrasses the user. People happily carry a flask with a small, neat logo. They leave a billboard at home.

If the order is for a December handover, the dates matter as much as the items. The year-end ordering timeline works backwards from the day you want gifts on desks. For handouts at events, where you need hundreds, not dozens, giveaways priced per hand is the better guide. For the mugs themselves, why printed mugs fade explains which ones last, and if the gifts are going into conference packs, see the delegate pack checklist.

Common questions

How much should a company spend per corporate gift in Kenya?

There is no correct figure, but tiering keeps it sensible. One workable split: a named mug from KSh 250 for each staff member, a branded notebook at KSh 550 to 900 for each client, and a flask or premium mug from KSh 1,000 for directors and top clients.

Can each gift carry a different name?

Yes. Mugs, flasks, notebooks and keyholders can each carry their own name within one order. Send the names as a typed list and approve a preview before printing.

What is the minimum order for branded corporate gifts?

It depends on the item. Flasks, tumblers and the Starbucks mug can be ordered as single pieces. Printed mugs and gift notebooks have a minimum of 12, and branded pens a minimum of 50.

Do you deliver corporate gifts outside Nairobi?

Yes, across Kenya. Delivery within Nairobi is included and delivery elsewhere is quoted at cost, so ask for the total when you confirm the order.
